Definition: Food Web

A network of interconnected food chains showing how various organisms are related through feeding relationships is called a food web.

Maharashtra State Board: Class 5

Concept of Food Web

Continuous interactions between producers, consumers, and saprophytes or decomposers. Each chain consists of multiple links. Ecosystems consist of interconnected food chains, forming a food web. In a food web, one animal might be part of multiple food chains. For example, a bird might eat insects (primary consumers) and small mammals (secondary consumers), while also being prey for a larger predator like an eagle.

A food web formed by the interlinking of several food chains

This food web shows how energy and nutrients flow through an ecosystem, with producers supporting herbivores, herbivores supporting carnivores, and all parts of the web being interconnected to create a balanced and stable environment.

Advantages of Food Web:

  1. Ecosystem stability is achieved through multiple pathways for energy flow, which support biodiversity, enhance resilience, and facilitate nutrient cycling.
  2. Energy distribution is efficient across species and levels, demonstrating interdependence.
  3. Adaptability allows species to adapt to changes in food availability.
  4. Sustainable populations are maintained by balancing predator-prey relationships.
  5. Resource utilisation ensures the complete utilisation of available resources, and ecosystem health indicates balance.
  6. These features contribute to the overall health and balance of ecosystems.

Key Points: Food Web

  • A food web is a network of interconnected food chains operating within an ecosystem.
  • It shows multiple feeding relationships, as organisms may have more than one food source.
  • Food webs represent the flow of energy and nutrients among producers and consumers.
  • The complexity of a food web depends on the diversity of organisms and the number of alternative food choices.
