1. Environmental sex determination

Sex in organisms is determined by three main mechanisms: environmental, genic (genetic) and chromosomal.

Environmental sex determination: In some reptiles, temperature during egg incubation decides sex.

  • Crocodiles and some lizards: high temperature → males; low temperature → females.
  • Turtles: below 28°C → mostly males; above 33°C → mostly females; 28–33°C → both sexes in roughly equal numbers.

2. Genic (genetic) sex determination

Sex is decided by specific genes.

  • In bacteria: fertility factor present in plasmid determines sex.
  • In Chlamydomonas: sex-determining genes are present.

3. Chromosomal sex determination

Proposed by E.B. Wilson and Stevens (1905); extended by T.H. Morgan and C. McClung.

Some chromosomes are autosomes; others are sex chromosomes (X, Y, Z, W).

In humans and Drosophila:

  • Female: XX (homogametic, produces only X-bearing gametes).
  • Male: XY (heterogametic, produces X- and Y-bearing gametes).
Type (i): Female homogametic, male heterogametic

XX–XY type:

  • Female: AA+XX; one kind of gamete with X chromosome.
  • Male: AA+XY; two kinds of gametes – X-bearing and Y-bearing.
  • Examples: human beings, Drosophila, many angiospermic plants.

XX–XO type:

  • Female: AA+XX; one kind of gamete with X chromosome.
  • Male: AA+XO; two kinds of gametes – A+X (gynosperm) and A+O (androsperm, no sex chromosome).
  • Examples: some plants (Vallisneria, Dioscorea), many insects (true bugs, grasshoppers, cockroaches).

Type (ii)

Here female produces two types of gametes; male produces one type.

Letters Z and W are used for sex chromosomes to avoid confusion with X and Y.

Type (ii): Male homogametic, female heterogametic

ZW–ZZ type:

  • Female: ZW (heterogametic); ova types A+Z and A+W.
  • Male: ZZ (homogametic); sperms A+Z only.
  • Examples: birds, many fishes and reptiles.

ZO–ZZ type:

  • Female: ZO (heterogametic); ova types A+Z and A+O (no sex chromosome).
  • Male: ZZ (homogametic); sperms A+Z only.
  • Examples: many moths and butterflies.
