Patents granted for biological entities and for products derived from them are called biopatents.

A patent is a special legal right granted by a government (through a Patent Office) to an inventor, giving them exclusive control over the commercial use of their invention for a defined period. A patent is legally treated as personal property – it can be sold, licensed, or transferred.

A patent document generally has three parts:
