Complications of Untreated STIs

Complication Meaning Associated STI
PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) Infection spreading to uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries Gonorrhoea, Chlamydiasis
Infertility Inability to conceive Multiple STIs
Abortions Spontaneous loss of pregnancy Syphilis, others
Still Births Baby born dead Syphilis
Ectopic Pregnancy Fertilised egg implants outside uterus (in fallopian tube) Chlamydiasis, PID
Cancer of Reproductive Tract Cervical cancer, anal cancer HPV
Neonatal infections Eye infections, pneumonia in newborns Gonorrhoea, Chlamydiasis

CISCE: Class 12

Prevention

  1. Avoid sexual contact with unknown or multiple partners
  2. Use condoms (barrier method) during sexual intercourse: reduces (but does not eliminate) risk
  3. Seek early medical help if any symptoms appear in the genital region
  4. Ensure complete treatment: partial treatment may not eliminate the pathogen
  5. Use sterile needles and syringes: do not share with others
  6. Screen blood before transfusion
  7. Vaccination: Hepatitis B vaccine (3-dose course); HPV vaccine (Gardasil) for girls before sexual activity
  8. Maintain hygiene of external genitalia
  9. Do not hesitate to consult a doctor due to social stigma

Key Points: Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)

  1. Meaning: STIs/ STDs are infections transmitted mainly through sexual intercourse; examples include gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis-B, genital herpes, and chlamydiasis.
  2. Modes of transmission: Besides sexual contact, some STIs spread through infected needles, blood transfusion, contaminated instruments, and from mother to fetus.
  3. Symptoms and risks: Early symptoms are mild (itching, discharge, pain), and females may remain asymptomatic, leading to late detection.
  4. Complications: Untreated STIs can cause PID, infertility, abortions, stillbirths, ectopic pregnancy, and reproductive tract cancers.
  5. Prevention: Avoid multiple/unknown partners, use condoms, and seek early medical diagnosis and complete treatment.
