Definition: Ecosystem Services

Ecosystem services are the economic, environmental, medical, and aesthetic benefits that humans obtain from healthy, functioning ecosystems. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA) report of 2005 categorises these into four main groups.

Major Ecological Services in Nature

  1. Oxygen Production & Carbon Fixation: Phytoplankton produce more than half of the atmospheric oxygen. The Amazon rainforest acts as the "lungs of the world" by heavily sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide and combating the greenhouse effect.
  2. Climate Regulation & Rainfall: Forests actively generate rainfall and maintain local climates through transpiration (e.g., an average maple tree releases 200 liters of water per hour in summer).
  3. Pollination: Biotic agents like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are essential for the survival of 250,000+ flowering plant species. They are responsible for 35% of global crop production and sustain 60–80% of wild plant species.
  4. Seed Dispersal: Birds and mammals (such as hoarding squirrels) provide an efficient, economical mechanism to transport seeds to habitable environments.
  5. Habitat Nurseries: Undisturbed marine estuaries, salt marshes, and mangroves serve as critical breeding grounds and nurseries for shrimp, oysters, crabs, and fish.
  6. Microbial Biogeochemical Cycling: Bacteria naturally fix atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates, supplying the essential atoms needed to synthesize DNA, RNA, and proteins. Microbes also cleanse wastes and transform sulfur, carbon, and iron.
  7. Biotechnology & Genetic Resources: Organisms act as a vast genetic library. The bacterium Thermus aquaticus provides the vital enzyme for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).
  8. Bioleaching: The bacterium Thiobacillus ferro-oxidans is utilized to recover up to 70% of copper from low-grade ores.
  9. Phytoextraction: The strategic use of plant hybrids to decontaminate soils and remove heavy metals or radionuclides from polluted areas.
