Geitonogamy

Geitonogamy (meaning: marriage between neighbours) is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another flower borne on the same plant.

Key Characteristics

  • Functionally → similar to cross-pollination, as it involves a pollinating agent (e.g., bees, wind).
  • Genetically → similar to autogamy (self-pollination), because pollen grains come from the same plant and therefore carry the same genetic material.
  • It is of ecological significance only - it does not bring about genetic variation.

Key Points: Geitonogamy

  • Geitonogamy is the transfer of pollen from anther to the stigma of another flower on the same plant.
  • It is functionally cross-pollination because it involves a pollinating agent.
  • It is genetically similar to self-pollination (autogamy) since pollen comes from the same plant.
  • Thus, it shows features of both self and cross-pollination.
