Monoploidy and Haploidy

Monoploidy

A monoploid organism has a single basic set of chromosomes. In some plants such as barley and corn, monoploids may occur naturally or may be produced artificially.

Haploidy

A haploid organism possesses half the number of chromosomes found in the somatic cells of the species.

Key Features of Haploids:

  • They contain only one set of chromosomes.
  • During meiosis, chromosomes remain as univalents at metaphase I.
  • These univalents move independently during anaphase I.

Why This Matters:

Because homologous chromosome pairing is not normal in haploids, their meiotic behaviour helps in understanding chromosome relationships and inheritance patterns.

Origin of Haploids

Haploids may arise in several ways:

  • By parthenogenesis, where an unfertilized egg develops.
