Potency of Stem Cells

Stem Cell Type Differentiation Capacity Characteristics & Examples
Totipotent Capable of differentiating into embryonic cell types. A single totipotent cell (produced by early blastomeres) can develop into a complete organism.
Pluripotent Capable of differentiating into all cell types. Descendants of totipotent cells. Examples include cells of the inner cell mass and the three embryonic germ layers.
Multipotent Capable of differentiating into a limited number of cell types. Restricted to cell types that belong to a closely related family of cells.

Types of Stem Cells (in Mammals)

Stem Cell Type Source / Origin Characteristics & Applications
Embryonic Stem Cells Isolated from a human blastocyst. The most versatile stem cells; they hold the highest potential for transplant applications.
Foetal Stem Cells Obtained from aborted foetuses. These cells are multipotent.
Adult Stem Cells Sourced from bone marrow, adipose tissue, and blood. Cannot give rise to all cell types, but highly useful. Bone marrow is a particularly rich source used to treat spinal cord injuries, liver cirrhosis, and chronic limb ischaemia.
