- The Growing Threat: Ecosystems and species face unprecedented threats today, with human activities driving species extinction at an alarming and rapid rate.
- Initial Response (November 1988): To address this crisis, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) convened the Ad Hoc Working Group of Experts on Biological Diversity to explore the need for a global treaty.
- Legal Framework (May 1989): The working group successfully prepared an international legal instrument dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
- Nairobi Convention (May 22, 1992): These continuous global efforts officially culminated in the adoption of the Nairobi Convention on Biological Diversity.
