Syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.

Mode of transmission: Mainly through unprotected sexual contact; can also pass from infected mother to foetus (congenital syphilis).

Stages and Key Features:

Primary stage Painless ulcer at site of infection (chancre)
Secondary stage Skin rash, fever, general illness
Latent stage No visible symptoms; infection persists inside the body.
Tertiary stage Serious complications, especially nervous system and cardiovascular damage

Major Complications:

  • Nervous system involvement (neurosyphilis).
  • Cardiovascular disorders.
  • Risk to unborn child in pregnancy (congenital syphilis).

Prevention:

  • Correct and consistent use of condoms.
  • Avoidance of unsafe sexual practices.
  • Screening and medical check-up, especially during pregnancy.

Treatment (Concept Level):

  • Curable with appropriate antibiotic therapy, commonly penicillin, especially if started early.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment prevent serious late complications.
