Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted bacterial disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Site of Infection:

  • Affects male and female genital organs.
  • Can infect the eyes of newborn babies, leading to scarring of the front of the eyeball.

Symptoms:

In Males In Females
Intense burning sensation in the penis. Often no obvious symptoms; infection may remain unnoticed.
Profuse yellowish pus discharge from the penis. If present: pain while passing urine, more frequent urination, urethral discharge.
Symptoms usually appear 3–10 days after sexual intercourse. Symptoms usually start 3–10 days after infection.

Spread:

Infection starts in genitalia and can spread to other parts of the body.

Complications:

  • Pelvic inflammation (often due to involvement of fallopian tubes).
  • Peritonitis (in severe cases).
  • Arthritis.
  • Infertility in both men and women if untreated.

Prevention:

  • Avoid promiscuous sexual activity.
  • Use condoms as a protective measure.

Treatment:

Treated with antibiotics; resistant strains respond to modern antibiotic regimens such as norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin.
