Definition: Autosomes

Autosomes are the kind of chromosomes which determine general body features like complexion, height, seed colour, etc. Humans have 22 pairs of autosomes.

Definition: Sex Chromosomes

Sex chromosomes (also called allosomes) are the kind of chromosomes that determine the sex of an organism. Every human has only 1 pair of sex chromosomes.

Types of sex determination

  • In some insects like grasshoppers and roundworms, females are XX and males are XO.
  • In humans, other mammals, many insects like Drosophila, and some plants, females are XX and males are XY.
  • The Y chromosome is different in size and shape, but it still pairs with the X chromosome during meiosis.
  • In birds and some reptiles, females are WZ and males are WW; this is called the WZ system.

Heterogametic and homogametic

  • Heterogametic sex produces two types of gametes: male in XO and XY systems and female in WZ system.
  • Homogametic sex produces only one type of gamete: female in XO and XY systems and male in WZ system.
