Stem cells are foundational cells found in multicellular organisms. They are unique because they can self-renew (through mitotic division) and differentiate into a wide variety of specialised cell types.

Broad Types of Mammalian Stem Cells

Embryonic Stem Cells:

Adult Stem Cells:

  • Found in developed organisms and tissues.
  • Pluripotent Adult Cells: Very rare, but can be found in sources like umbilical cord blood.
  • Multipotent Adult Cells: Most adult stem cells are lineage-restricted (they can only become certain types of cells). They are named by their tissue origin, such as mesenchymal, adipose-derived, or endothelial stem cells.

Mechanism of Stem Cell Treatment

  • Working: Stem cell therapy introduces new, lab-cultured cells into damaged tissues to treat diseases or injuries.
  • The Advantage: Because these cells can be grown and differentiated into specific tissue types (such as nerves or muscles), they can replace diseased areas with minimal risk of side effects or tissue rejection.

Current Treatments: Bone marrow and umbilical cord blood stem cells are actively used to treat cancers such as leukaemia and lymphoma.

Future Potential: Medical researchers anticipate that stem cell technology will eventually treat a vast array of conditions, including the following:

  • Brain, spinal cord, and heart damage
  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus
  • Vision impairment (blindness), deafness, and missing teeth
  • Muscle damage and baldness

Research: Stem cells are also expected to prove highly valuable in genetic and pharmaceutical research.
