Introduction and Historical Background

The recapitulation theory, also called the biogenetic law, states that the development of an individual organism repeats, in brief, the evolutionary history of its species.

The theory was proposed by Ernst Haeckel in the 1860s. It suggested that embryonic development passes through stages that resemble the ancestral forms of the organism.
