Introduction

Smiling is a clear sign of attachment behaviour. When we meet a close friend or family member, we smile. Smiles, pleasant gestures, and positive emotions show attachment. A baby's smile conveys different messages at different ages. Smiling helps a baby to connect with the mother, caretaker, and other people. These smiles influence how people interact with each other.

Stepwise Explanation

1. Early Smiles (0–6 weeks)

  • These are reflexive and not directed at anyone in particular.
  • They show comfort but do not yet indicate true attachment.

2. Social Smiles (6 weeks–7 months)

  • Babies start to smile in response to people, especially those they see often.
  • Social smiles begin the process of forming attachment.

3. Selective Smiles (After 7 months)

  • Babies smile mostly at familiar people (parents, main caregivers).
  • This shows they know who makes them feel safe.

4. Reciprocal Smiles

  • When a caregiver smiles at a baby and gets a smile back, trust and closeness grow.
  • Smiling becomes a two-way communication, strengthening the bond.
