Meaning and Uses of Assertive Training

  • Assertive training is a behaviour therapy method that helps people behave more suitably in social situations.
  • It is used to reduce anxiety that has developed in interpersonal situations.
  • It is applied when the desired behaviour is blocked by personal timidity and hesitation.
  • It is helpful for people who are afraid to express and insist on their legitimate rights.
CISCE: Class 12

Nonassertive Individuals

  • Nonassertive people often have problems in interpersonal relationships because they do not speak up.
  • They may remain silent even when others take advantage of them, such as when someone pushes ahead in a queue.
  • Their nonassertiveness may be due to lack of learning or the mistaken belief that assertion is the same as hostility.
  • They are more likely to develop fear and timidity and may become withdrawn and unhappy.
CISCE: Class 12

Assessment and Procedure of Assertive Training

  • The therapist first measures how nonassertive the person is, usually with a questionnaire.
  • The therapist then gives tasks or situations where the client must defend their rights.
  • If the client fails to respond assertively, the therapist trains them to behave in a more assertive way.
  • With repeated practice, the client becomes more assertive, gains self-confidence and learns that assertiveness is different from hostility.
CISCE: Class 12

Goal of Assertive Training (Duke and Nowicki, 1979)

  • The goal is to move a passive person from the extreme left of a behaviour dimension towards the middle.
  • Very aggressive people could also benefit from moving towards the middle, but they are usually less miserable and rarely seek help.
CISCE: Class 12
