Creativity and Intelligence - Relation Between Creativity and Intelligence

The debate over the relationship between intelligence and creativity is central to understanding psychological attributes and educational success. Both qualities are valued but serve distinct roles in personal and academic achievement.

Wechsler defined intelligence as "the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally and to deal effectively with his environment." 

The ability to produce original, useful ideas or solutions often involves seeing things from a novel angle and thinking “outside the box”.

• Not all intelligent people are creative: Studies (e.g., Terman) show that high IQ isn’t a guarantee of creativity.
• Creativity needs some intelligence: Minimum mental ability is required for creative work, but after that, intelligence and creativity aren’t strongly connected.
• Tests of creativity are open-ended: They measure variety, flexibility, and originality – not just right answers.

• Curiosity and imagination.
• Humor, playfulness, and adaptability.
• Risk-taking and independence.
• Willingness to think differently.

• An intelligent student solves textbook questions quickly and accurately.
• A creative student invents a new way to explain those questions to classmates or finds unique solutions for common problems.

• Intelligence uses convergent thinking (one correct answer), while creativity uses divergent thinking (many possible ideas).
