Introduction

Motor development means how a baby learns to control and use muscles for movement. This happens quickly after birth. Growth follows two main patterns: from head to toe (cephalocaudal) and from the body center to the arms and legs (proximodistal). Babies learn skills through both natural growth and learning. Motor development helps a child become independent and adjust to the world.

CISCE: Class 12

Importance of Motor Development

  • Helps the baby to sit, stand, walk, run, and hold things.
  • Needed for showing feelings, like anger or fear.
  • Early motor development helps babies do things on their own.

Reflexes in Newborns

Reflexes are automatic actions babies do without thinking, controlled by the spinal cord and brain. These help babies live and protect themselves.

Types of Reflexes:

Reflex Name Description (in simple words)
Grasping Reflex Baby’s fingers hold tightly when something touches their palm (can hold their weight). This comes from ancestors and slowly disappears.
Moro (“Embrace”) A baby spreads its arms and legs if surprised or hears a loud sound. This vanishes around 6 months.
Sucking/Swallowing Baby sucks and swallows anything in their mouth—bottle or finger. Needed for feeding.

Other Major Reflexes

Reflex Type What Happens
Eyelid Response Closing eyes to light or air
Pupillary Response Eyes adjust pupil size with light
Ocular Reflex Eyes move to keep focus even if the head moves
Facial/Throat/Hand Smiling, crying, sneezing, grasping, etc.
Leg/Foot Reflex Kicking, jerking legs, toes move when stroked
CISCE: Class 12

Mass and Specific Movements

After birth, babies make many random movements. These help their muscles get stronger. Examples include:

  • Moving hands and legs, stretching, kicking.
  • These random movements prepare babies for real actions, like grasping or walking.

Movement Percentage:

Type Percentage (%)
Head Movements 5
Body/Leg Movements 30
Arm Movements 20
Movement to Sound 15
Other Movements 30

How Development Progresses?

  • At first, the baby reacts with the whole body to touch. Soon, only specific parts react (like just moving the leg).
  • Some reflexes that are not needed go away as the baby grows, while useful ones change or stay.
  • Learning and growing help the baby control muscles better over time.
CISCE: Class 12

Key Points: Motor Development

  • Motor development is how babies learn to move and control muscles.
  • It follows two patterns: head-to-toe and center-to-limbs.
  • It helps babies sit, walk, run, and hold things — making them more independent.
  • Reflexes are automatic actions (like sucking or grasping) that protect babies and help them survive.
  • Babies start with random full-body movements that later become specific and controlled.
  • Reflexes such as the grasping reflex and Moro reflex disappear as they grow and learn.
