Social scientists are less concerned with the reasons behind group formation and more interested in understanding the factors that shape how groups function. These factors, referred to as the ingredients of group behaviour, are the key elements that drive individuals to become and remain members of groups. Six such ingredients have been identified.

1. Security:

  • Group membership helps overcome the vulnerability of being alone.
  • Being in a group enhances strength, reduces self-doubt, and builds resilience against threats.

2. Self-Esteem: 

  • Belonging to a group contributes to a person's sense of personal worth.
  • Beyond external perception, membership generates an internal feeling of value among members.

3. Status:

  • Group affiliation is seen as a mark of distinction by outsiders.
  • It serves as a source of social recognition and elevates an individual's standing.

4. Affiliation:

  • Groups fulfil the fundamental human need for social connection.
  • Regular group interactions become the principal means of satisfying the desire for companionship and belonging.

5. Power:

  • Certain outcomes unattainable individually become achievable through collective effort.
  • Combined group strength amplifies the capacity to bring about change.

6. Goal Achievement: 

  • Some objectives require multiple individuals working together.
  • Groups enable the consolidation of diverse talents, knowledge, and resources to complete tasks that no single person could accomplish alone.
