Introduction

Adolescence is the time in life when a child turns into an adult. It is split into early, middle, and late stages. During this period, young people experience changes in their bodies, feelings, and social lives.

CISCE: Class 12

Physical Changes During Adolescence

Biological Changes:

  • The body grows very quickly—bones and muscles become bigger and stronger.
  • Sexual development begins. For girls, puberty starts with the first period. For boys, it begins with new hair and physical changes.
  • Both boys and girls show changes in their main (primary) and extra (secondary) sex features.

Glandular Changes:

  • The body’s glands make more hormones during puberty.
  • These hormones help bones and muscles grow and change the way the body looks.

Growth in Height and Weight:

  • Teens become taller and heavier than before.
  • Everyone grows differently, but most become bigger, and body parts adjust to adult size.

Body Proportions Change:

  • The limbs and trunk (middle part of the body) change to look more grown-up.

Connection Between Body Changes:

  • All changes happen together. Muscle growth connects to sexual changes (like puberty).
