Introduction

Perpendicular Lines: Two lines are considered perpendicular to each other when they form an angle of 90°.

The concept of perpendicularity is built upon the Right Angle.

A Right Angle is an angle with an exact measure of 90° (ninety degrees).

  • Geometric Representation: A right angle is represented in diagrams by a small square () placed at the vertex (the point where the two rays or lines meet).
CISCE: Class 6

Definition: Perpendicular Lines

When two lines intersect, and the angle between them is a right angle, then the lines are said to be perpendicular.

In mathematics, the relationship of perpendicularity is denoted by the symbol .

If Line A and Line B are perpendicular, the relationship is written as AB  PQ.

CISCE: Class 6

Real-Life Applicatons

  1. Notebook Corner: Vertical and horizontal edges meet at 90°.

  2. Wooden Planks: Adjacent sides form right angles in a frame.

  3. Room Walls: Each wall is perpendicular to the floor.

CISCE: Class 6

Key Points Summary

Term Definition Notation/Symbol Condition
Right Angle An angle measuring exactly 90°. 90°
Perpendicularity The relationship between lines that meet at 90°. Intersection creates a Right Angle
