Definition: Integers

The numbers −1, −2, −3, … (to the left of zero) are negative numbers or negative integers, and the numbers 1, 2, 3, … (to the right of zero) are positive numbers or positive integers.
Hence, the new set of numbers …, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3,… are called integers.

Introduction to Integers and Their Representation

Integers are derived from the Latin word "integer," which means "whole" or "intact". So, integers include all whole numbers, including negative numbers that do not have any fractional or decimal components. The set of integers is infinite and extends in both positive and negative directions.

Symbol for Integers:
The symbol used to represent the set of integers is "ℤ". This symbol comes from the German word "Zahlen", which means "numbers."

z = {.. −2, −1, 0, 1, 2,..}

Understanding the Collection of Integers through Sets

The collection of integers can be represented using the following diagram:

Real-Life Application

The Elevator Story:

Imagine you're in a tall building with an elevator. This is one of the best ways to understand positive and negative integers:
Elevator analogy for understanding positive and negative integers

  • Ground floor = 0 (our starting point)

  • Floors above ground = Positive integers (+1, +2, +3...)

  • Basement floors = Negative integers (−1, −2, −3...)

When the elevator goes up from the ground floor, you're moving to positive floors. When it goes below ground level, you enter the negative floors.(basements).

Key Points Summary

  • All positive integers are greater than zero.

  • All negative integers are less than zero.

  • Among positive integers, larger numbers are greater.

  • Among negative integers, numbers closer to zero are greater.
