Introduction

segment is a region of a circle enclosed by:

  1. chord (a straight line connecting any two points on the circle)

  2. The arc (the curved part of the circle between those two points)

Types of Segments

1. Minor Segment

  • The smaller region created by a chord.

  • Contains the shorter arc.

  • Usually does not contain the center of the circle unless the chord is a diameter.

2. Major Segment

  • The larger of the two regions created by a chord.

  • Contains the longer arc.

  • Usually contains the center of the circle.

3. Semicircle (Special Case)

  • Formed when the chord is a diameter (a line passing through the center).

  • Divides the circle into two equal halves.

  • Each equal half is called a semicircle.

  • The diameter is the longest possible chord.
