- Testes are a pair of oval-shaped glands responsible for producing sperm, with an adult testis measuring roughly 4–5 cm in length, 2–3 cm in width, and weighing about 25 g.
- During early foetal life, they develop in the abdominal cavity and descend into the scrotum through the inguinal canal during the 7th month of development.
- The testes are structurally supported by a peritoneal fold called the mesorchium and anchored to the scrotal wall by a fibrous cord known as the gubernaculum.
- Clinical conditions related to this descent include cryptorchidism (the failure of the testes to descend into the scrotum) and inguinal hernia (when an intestinal loop enters the scrotum through an unclosed inguinal canal).
