Basic Principle of Fossil Dating

A fossil is often dated indirectly by determining the age of the rock layer in which it is embedded. If the age of the surrounding rock is known, the fossil is assumed to be of approximately the same age.

Scientists also use radioactive elements present in rocks because these elements change at a regular rate over long periods. By measuring the amount of the original radioactive element and the amount of the new element formed from it, the age of the rock can be estimated.

Methods Used to Determine Fossil Age

1. Geological Strata Method

  • Fossils are found in sedimentary rock layers called strata.
  • The geological age of the stratum gives an estimate of the fossil’s age.
  • This method is useful for understanding relative position in geological time.

2. Uranium-Lead Method

  • Uranium gradually changes into lead over time.
  • By measuring the amount of lead formed from uranium in rocks, the age of the rock can be estimated.
  • This method is useful for studying very old rocks because such radioactive elements have long half-lives.

3. Radiocarbon Dating

  • Radioactive carbon dating is widely used to determine the age of fossils.
  • This method is especially important in dating once-living material within a suitable age range.
  • It is one of the best-known radioactive dating methods in biology and archaeology.

4. Potassium-Argon Method

  • Radioactive potassium-40 changes into argon over time.
  • Measuring this transformation helps estimate the age of fossil-bearing rocks.
  • This method is useful for rocks associated with fossils of considerable age.

5. Rubidium-Strontium Method

  • Radioactive rubidium-87 changes into strontium over time.
  • This change is used to estimate the age of certain rocks.
  • Like uranium and potassium methods, it is useful where long time intervals are involved.

6. Other Geological Indicators

  • Shorter geological periods may be estimated by measuring the rate at which waterfalls retreat upstream as they erode bedrock.
  • Another method involves counting annual clay deposits formed at the bottoms of ponds and lakes.
