Introduction

The Earth Summit refers to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), a landmark global meeting held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 that brought together world leaders to address the growing conflict between environmental protection and economic development.

It is considered the foundational event for modern international environmental governance, and it directly produced the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
