Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) - Trichomoniasis

Sexually transmitted protozoan infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis.

• Spreads through unprotected sexual contact with an infected person.
• Often a silent infection: many cases have no symptoms, yet the person can still transmit the disease.

Male symptoms:
Itching/irritation inside the penis, burning after urination or ejaculation, possible penile discharge.

Female symptoms:
Vaginal itching, burning, redness or soreness of genitals, discomfort during urination, thin foul-smelling discharge (clear/white/yellowish/greenish).

Complications (if untreated):
Infection can persist for months or years, increasing the risk of contracting other STIs and causing discomfort during sex.

Prevention:
Correct and consistent condom use, a single faithful partner, avoiding multiple/unprotected partners, and early testing.

Treatment:
Curable with metronidazole or tinidazole (oral); both partners must be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection.
