Key Points: Energy Flow and Standing Crop

  • The Sun is the only source of energy for all ecosystems on Earth, except for deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystems.
  • Less than 50% of incident solar radiation is Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR), and plants capture only 2–10% of PAR to sustain the entire living world.
  • Energy flows unidirectionally — from the Sun → Producers → Consumers, following the First Law of Thermodynamics; it is never recycled.
  • Ecosystems follow the Second Law of Thermodynamics, meaning organisms constantly need energy to synthesise molecules and counteract increasing disorder (disorderliness).
  • Energy flow begins with producers (green plants, phytoplankton, algae) and ends with tertiary consumers; energy not passed on is released when organisms die, entering the detritus food chain.
