Definition: Mutualism
Mutualism is an interaction between two species in which both are benefited.
Maharashtra State Board: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12
Introduction
Mutualism is a type of interspecific interaction in which both the participating species derive a net benefit from the relationship, thereby enhancing each other's survival and reproductive success.
- Interaction symbol: (+, +)
- Organisms involved are called symbionts
- The relationship may be obligate (both species fully dependent) or facultative (beneficial but not essential for survival)
- Mutualism is a form of symbiosis (living together), but symbiosis is a broader term that also includes commensalism and parasitism
Maharashtra State Board: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12
Types of Mutualism
1. Based on Dependency
| Type | Description | Can Partners Survive Alone? | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Obligate Mutualism | Both species are entirely dependent on each other for survival | No | Fig tree and fig wasp |
| Facultative Mutualism | Both species benefit but can survive independently if separated | Yes | Birds removing parasites from rhinos |
2. Based on Function
| Functional Type | What is exchanged? | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Trophic Mutualism | Energy and nutrients | Mycorrhizae (plant sugars ↔ fungal phosphorus) |
| Defensive Mutualism | Protection in exchange for food/shelter | Acacia ants (ants guard plant, plant provides food) |
| Dispersive Mutualism | Pollen/seed dispersal in exchange for food | Bees and flowering plants |
Maharashtra State Board: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12
Examples
| Example | Partner A | Partner B | Mechanism (The Exchange) |
| Lichens | Alga | Fungus |
Alga provides organic food (sugars). Fungus provides structural support, moisture, and minerals. |
| Mycorrhizae | Plant Roots | Fungi |
Plant provides carbohydrates. Fungus expands root absorption area for water and minerals. |
| Rhizobium & Legumes | Leguminous Plant | Rhizobium Bacteria |
Plant provides carbohydrates and shelter (root nodules). Bacteria uses nitrogenase to fix atmospheric N₂ into usable NH₄⁺. |
| Fig & Fig Wasp | Fig Tree | Fig Wasp |
Tree provides a safe egg-laying site (oviposition) and food. Wasp exclusively pollinates the enclosed fig flowers. |
| Ophrys Orchid & Bee | Ophrys Orchid (+) | Male Bee (0) |
Orchid mimics a female bee (visually and chemically) to get pollinated. Bee receives absolutely no reward (deceived). |
Maharashtra State Board: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12
Key Points: Mutualism
- Mutualism is an interaction where both species benefit from each other, represented as (+, +).
- Lichens are a mutualistic association between fungi and algae/cyanobacteria, where fungi provide shelter and algae provide food through photosynthesis.
- Mycorrhizae are associations between fungi and plant roots, where fungi help the plant absorb nutrients from the soil, and the plant provides carbohydrates to the fungi.
- Fig trees and wasps share a one-to-one relationship where the wasp pollinates the fig, and the fig provides developing seeds as food for the wasp larvae.
- The orchid Ophrys* uses "sexual deceit" by resembling a female bee, causing male bees to pseudocopulate with it and transfer pollen from flower to flower.
