Definition: Population Growth Curve

When the number of individuals in a population is plotted against time, it yields a specific mathematical pattern called a population growth curve. The shape depends entirely on the presence and intensity of environmental resistance.

J-Shaped / Exponential Growth Curve

  • Condition: Occurs under theoretical, ideal conditions where resources (food, space) are completely unlimited.
  • Mechanism: Environmental resistance is absent. The growth rate is directly proportional to population size, causing the population to double at regular intervals.
  • Growth Pattern: Begins with a slow initial phase, followed by a rapid, geometric explosion that continues unhindered as long as resources permit.
  • Real-World Occurrence: Extremely rare in nature; observed temporarily in carefully managed laboratory bacterial cultures. It cannot be sustained infinitely due to natural resource limits.

  1. Lag Phase: Slow initial growth as the population adapts.
