Definition: Ovarian follicle

A structure in the ovary consisting of an ovum surrounded by layers of granulosa cells that supports the growth and maturation of the ovum is called an ovarian follicle.

Stages of Follicle Development

Hormonal Regulation

Hypothalamus → GnRH → Anterior Pituitary → FSH + LH → Ovary

  • FSH → stimulates follicle growth → granulosa cells secrete estrogen
  • Rising estrogen → negative feedback → suppresses FSH → only 1 dominant follicle survives
  • Peak estrogen → positive feedbackLH surge → triggers ovulation on Day 14
  • Post-ovulation → LH → corpus luteum → progesterone secretion
