Testes - Location and Temperature Regulation of Testes

The two testes (popularly called testicles) are oval organs which are contained in a thin-walled sac of skin called the scrotum (or scrotal sac).

1. The testes are located outside the abdomen in the scrotum, which is divided internally by the septum scroti.
2. The scrotum maintains a temperature 2-2.5°C below normal body temperature – a critical requirement for spermatogenesis – through a lack of fatty insulation and involuntary muscle adjustments.
3. Testicular location varies among mammals; they descend only during breeding seasons in some (e.g., bats, llamas) and remain permanently internal in others (e.g., elephants, whales).
