Introduction

Personality means all the unique qualities—behaviors, thoughts, and feelings—that make a person different from others. Personality develops from the combined effects of heredity (biological factors) and environment (social and situational influences).

CISCE: Class 12

Types of Determinants

CISCE: Class 12

Biological/Hereditary Factors

a) Genes

  • Decide physical features (height, skin color), intelligence, and some temperamental traits (like being shy or bold).

b) Endocrine Glands & Hormones

  • Glands like the thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and sex glands secrete hormones affecting emotions, growth, and energy.

Example Table:

Gland Hormone Effect if Balanced Effect of Imbalance
Thyroid Thyroxine Normal growth, alertness Too much: nervousness; Too little: dullness
Adrenal Adrenaline Handles stress Anxiety, mood swings
Pituitary Growth hormone Normal height, development Dwarfism or gigantism

c) Physique

  • Body build often affects self-esteem and social reactions.
  • Example: Tall and athletic = seen as confident (may develop a leader-like personality).

d) Nervous System

  • A healthy and adaptable nervous system enables flexible thinking and social adjustment.

Environmental Factors

  • Family: Parenting style, discipline, emotional environment. Warm/supportive family = confident personality.
  • Culture & Society: Traditions, values, and expectations shape behaviors (collectivist vs. individualist tendencies).
  • Peers & Social Groups: Friends and colleagues influence habits, speech, and dress.
CISCE: Class 12

Situational Factors

  • Immediate circumstances (example: exam stress) can make even a calm person act nervously.
  • People often "switch" personalities depending on roles (student at school vs. friend at home).
CISCE: Class 12

Psychological Factors

  • Attitudes, motivation, mental health (anxiety, depression, optimism).
  • Ability to learn from experience, emotional maturity, aspirations.
CISCE: Class 12

Key Points: Determinants of Personality

  • Biological Factors: Genes, hormones, and physique influence basic traits such as temperament and energy levels.
  • Environmental Factors: Family, culture, and peers shape attitudes, habits, and values.
  • Situational Factors: Mood, roles, and recent events can temporarily change behavior (e.g., exam stress).
  • Psychological Factors: Motivation, mental health, and self-image affect how we think and adapt.
  • Key Idea: Personality is shaped by both heredity and environment, with all factors interacting continuously.
