Introduction to Information and Communication Technology
1) Definition of ICT
- ICT is the short form of three basic terms − Information, Communication, and Technology.
- It includes various forms of technologies that are used to create, display, store, process, transmit, share, or exchange information by electronic means (UNESCO 2007). Such a discipline which deals in the creation and communication of information is called ICT.
2) What is Information ?
- The representation of data in a meaningful way is called information.
- Example: Muskan’s profile (age, class, hobbies) is data; when used by the teacher to make a decision (select for competition), it becomes information.
3) What is Communication ?
- Defined as imparting or exchanging information by speaking, writing, or using any other medium.
- It is also referred for conveying feelings, thoughts, and emotions in any verbal and non‑verbal medium.
- Four essential Elements of Communication
1. Sender
2. Message
3. Medium
4. Receiver - When all four elements are in sync with each other in terms of sequence, relevance, appropriateness, etc., then communication becomes effective.
- Example: Muskan recorded a video of an experiment and shared it. Here, she is the sender, the video is the message, the mobile phone or blog is the medium, and viewers are the receivers.
4) What is Technology ?
- Refers to methods, systems, and devices resulting from scientific knowledge used for practical purposes.
- Helps in both the creation and communication of information.
- Example: Muskan took photos of mineral ores at a museum using a mobile phone and shared them on her blog.
