Personality classification is the process of grouping people based on similarities in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Different theories use types or categories to help us better understand individual differences.

Classification of Personality

1. Sheldon’s Theory of Personality

Classifies personalities based on body type:

  • Endomorphic (round): relaxed, sociable.
  • Mesomorphic (muscular): active, bold.
  • Ectomorphic (thin): thoughtful, introverted.

2. Kretschmer’s Theory of Personality

Links body shape to personality:

  • Pyknic: sociable, friendly
  • Athletic: active
  • Asthenic: reserved, sensitive

3. Friedman’s Theory of Personality

Classified by behavioural style:

  • Type A: ambitious, hurried, competitive.
  • Type B: relaxed, patient, easy-going.

4. Charak Samhita’s Ayurvedic Theory of Personality

Ancient Indian theory divides personality by mind-body constitution (Prakriti):

  • Personality Types of Charaka and Sushruta: Based on combinations of three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha).
  • Personality Types of Triguna:
  • Sattva: calm, disciplined, wise
  • Rajas: active, ambitious, restless
  • Tamas: lazy, dull, inactive
