Introduction

Every electric cell, while supplying current to a circuit, offers some resistance to the flow of current within itself. This internal opposition is a key reason why the voltage measured across a cell's terminals is always slightly less than its actual electromotive force (e.m.f.) when current flows.

Definition: Internal Resistance

The internal resistance (r) of a cell is the resistance offered by the electrolyte and electrodes inside the cell to the flow of ionic current through it.

  • Represented in circuits as a resistance in series with the ideal e.m.f. source.

Cause of Internal Resistance

Internal resistance arises because:

  • Current inside the cell flows as ionic motion through the electrolyte, not electron flow (as in wires).
  • Ions face resistance while moving between the electrodes due to electrolyte viscosity and ionic collisions.
  • Part of the chemical energy converted into electrical energy is dissipated as heat inside the cell itself.

Real-Life Analogy

Analogy: Think of internal resistance like friction inside a water pipe. Even if a pump (the cell) pushes water (current) with a certain pressure (e.m.f.), some pressure is lost overcoming friction inside the pipe itself before the water reaches the tap (external circuit). Similarly, some of the cell's e.m.f. is "used up" overcoming internal resistance before the current reaches the external circuit.
