Definition: Voltmeter

A device used to measure the potential difference (voltage) between two points in a circuit. It is connected in parallel across those points and ideally offers infinite resistance so that it does not alter the current in the circuit.

Principle of Conversion

To convert a galvanometer into a voltmeter, a high resistance R is connected in series with the galvanometer coil. This ensures:

  • Only a small, safe current (Ig) flows through the galvanometer at full-scale deflection
  • The combination can safely measure a much larger voltage V
  • The overall resistance of the voltmeter increases, moving it closer to the "ideal" (infinite resistance) condition

Given:

  • Galvanometer coil resistance = G
  • Full-scale deflection current = Ig
  • Desired voltage range = V

Step 1: Total resistance required so that current Ig flows for voltage V: V = Ig(R + G)

Step 2: Solve for series resistance R: R = \[\frac {V}{I_g}\] − G

Step 3: Total voltmeter resistance: RV = R + G

Given: G = 12 Ω, Ig = 3 mA = 0.003 A, V = 18 V

Step-by-step solution:
