Introduction

Wave optics is the branch of optics that studies the wave nature of light and explains phenomena that cannot be explained by ray optics alone, such as interference, diffraction, and polarisation.

In the study of light, two major viewpoints were historically proposed. One viewpoint treated light as a stream of particles, while the other treated light as a wave.

Historical Development of the Wave Theory of Light

Corpuscular View

René Descartes and Isaac Newton supported the corpuscular description of light. Newton discussed this view in his work Opticks. According to this model, light was considered to consist of very small particles called corpuscles.

Wave View

Christian Huygens proposed the wave theory of light in 1678. According to this theory, light propagates in the form of waves.

Experimental Support

Thomas Young performed the interference experiment in 1801. This experiment strongly supported the wave nature of light.

Electromagnetic Theory

Later, James Clerk Maxwell showed that light is an electromagnetic wave. This explanation removed the need for a material medium for the propagation of light.

Geometrical Optics and Wave Optics

Geometrical optics treats light as rays and is based on the approximation that the wavelength of light tends to zero. This model is useful in many situations involving reflection and refraction.

Wave optics is required when the wave nature of light becomes important. In this treatment, the propagation and behaviour of light are studied using wave ideas.
