Introduction

Think of a water pipe: potential difference (V) is like water pressure, current (I) is the flow rate, and resistance (R) is the pipe's narrowness. A wider pipe (low resistance) allows more flow for the same pressure — just as a low-resistance conductor allows more current for the same voltage.

Experimental Verification

Apparatus Required

  • Battery/cells (1–4 cells)
  • Ammeter, Voltmeter
  • Rheostat
  • Resistor/nichrome wire
  • Plug key, connecting wires

Circuit Component Functions

Component Function
Cell/Battery Provides potential difference (EMF source)
Key Acts as switch — opens/closes circuit
Ammeter Measures current; connected in series
Voltmeter Measures potential difference; connected in parallel across resistor
Rheostat Varies current by changing resistance in circuit

Procedure (Step-by-Step)

  1. Connect the circuit: cell, key, ammeter, and resistor in series; voltmeter in parallel across the resistor.
  2. Close the key and adjust the rheostat to get the smallest current reading.
  3. Record the ammeter (I) and voltmeter (V) readings.
  4. Increase current in steps using the rheostat; record V and I for each step (5–6 readings).
  5. Plot a graph of V (y-axis) against I (x-axis).
  6. Calculate resistance from the slope: R = ΔV/ΔI.

Sample Observation Table

Sr. No. Current I (A) Potential Difference V (V) R = V/I (Ω)
1 0.1 3.0 30
2 0.2 6.0 30
3 0.3 9.0 30
4 0.4 12.0 30

Result: V/I remains constant (~30 Ω), verifying Ohm's Law.

Exceptions to Ohm's Law

Ohm's Law does not hold for:

  • Semiconductor devices (diodes, transistors)
  • Thermistors (resistance changes sharply with temperature)
  • Electrolytes and gas discharge tubes
  • Conductors where temperature changes significantly with current
