- Overview of Biodiversity, Conservation and Environmental Issues
Maharashtra State Board: Class 12
Introduction
Conservation of biodiversity means protecting, managing, and restoring the variety of living organisms so that species, habitats, and ecological balance are maintained for the future.
Biodiversity is valuable not only because it provides direct resources, but also because it supports ecological stability and has ethical significance.
Maharashtra State Board: Class 12
Reasons for Conserving Biodiversity
There are three major reasons for conserving biodiversity.
A. Narrowly Utilitarian Reasons
These are direct benefits obtained from living organisms.
- Biodiversity provides food, fuel, fibre, medicines, timber, and industrial raw materials.
- Many useful products are obtained from plants, animals, and microbes.
- Traditional medicines and modern drugs are often derived from biological sources.
Examples
- Medicines may be derived from plants and microbes.
- Useful genes for crop improvement may be found in wild relatives of plants.
B. Broadly Utilitarian Reasons
These are indirect ecological benefits that support life on Earth.
- Biodiversity helps in oxygen production, pollination, nutrient cycling, seed dispersal, and climate regulation.
- Healthy ecosystems maintain soil fertility, water balance, and food chains.
- Ecological services provided by nature support agriculture and human survival.
Analogy
Biodiversity in an ecosystem is like many parts of a machine; if too many parts fail, the whole system becomes weak.
C. Ethical Reasons
These reasons are based on moral responsibility.
- Every species has an inherent right to live.
- Human beings should not cause the extinction of other organisms without necessity.
- Future generations also have the right to enjoy natural biological wealth.
Maharashtra State Board: Class 12
Bioprospecting
Bioprospecting is the search for useful biological resources, such as medicinal compounds, valuable genes, and other commercially important products, from plants, animals, and microorganisms.
- It can lead to the discovery of new medicines and useful biological products.
- It shows the economic importance of conserving species before they disappear.
Maharashtra State Board: Class 12
Key Points: Conservation of Biodiversity
- Biodiversity conservation involves protecting, managing, and restoring living organisms to maintain species, habitats, and ecological balance for the future.
- Direct economic benefits include resources such as food, fuel, fibre, timber, traditional medicines, modern drugs, and useful genes found in wild plant relatives.
- Indirect ecological services provided by nature include oxygen production, crop pollination, nutrient cycling, seed dispersal, climate regulation, and soil fertility maintenance.
- Every living organism has an inherent right to live, creating a moral responsibility for humans to preserve natural biological wealth for future generations.
- Bioprospecting explores plants, animals, and microorganisms to discover commercially important products, valuable genes, and new medicines before species disappear.
