Introduction
Most of the water on Earth is salty and not fit for drinking. Only a small portion of water is fresh and usable.
Understanding percentages helps us calculate how much water is fit for drinking and how much is not, which is essential in environmental studies, water management, and planning.
CISCE: Class 6
Steps

CISCE: Class 6
Example
Most of the water on Earth is salty, i.e., unfit for drinking. Only 2.7% of the available water (by volume) is fresh. Find :
- the percentage of water on the Earth that is unfit for drinking.
- out of 5,00,000 m3 of water (taken from different parts of the earth and mixed), what amount of water is fit for drinking?
Solution :
(i) Since 2.7% of the available water is fit for drinking
The percentage of water unfit for drinking
= (100 - 2.7)% = 97.3%
(ii) Quantity of water fit for drinking
= 2.7% of the water taken
= `2.7/100` × 5,00,000 m3 = 13,500 m3
CISCE: Class 6
Key Points Summary
- Check units
- Use percentages to compare or distribute
- Percentage Complement = 100% - Given%
- Percentage to Decimal = Divide by 100
