Solving Equations of Common Forms
1. Equation of the form x + a = b
Example:
x + 3 = 10
⇒ x + 3 − 3 = 10 − 3
⇒ x = 7
2. Equation of the form x - a = b
Example:
x − 5 = 2
⇒ x - 5 + 5 = 2 + 5
⇒ x = 7
3. Equation of the form ax = b
Example:
2x = 6
⇒ x = `6/2` = 3
4. Equation of the form `x/a` = b
Example:
`y/2` = 5 ⇒ `y/2` × 2 = 5 × 2
⇒ y = 10
Solving Using Transposition
Transposition means moving a term from one side to another by changing its sign.

(i) 3x + 8 = 14

(ii) `m/3` + 7 = 11
⇒ `m/3` + 7 − 7 = 11 − 7
