Introduction

Dividing decimal numbers is an essential skill for many everyday tasks, such as budgeting, cooking, and measuring. It may seem tricky at first, but once you understand the basic rules, it's just like dividing whole numbers—with a little extra attention to where the decimal point goes! Let’s break it down step by step.

CISCE: Class 6

Case 1: Division of Decimal by a Natural (Whole) Number

Step 1: Choose your method

  • Method A (Standard Division): Use long division like you would with whole numbers.

  • Method B (Fraction Method): Convert the decimal to a fraction and divide.

Step 2: Simplify the Result (if needed)

Example 1:

`83.6/2` = 41.8

   41.8
`2")"overline(83.6)"("`
   8
      3
      2
      16
      16
        ×

Example 2:

6.2 ÷ 2 = `62/10` ÷  `2/1`

            = `62/10` ×  `1/2`

            = `31/10`

            = 3.1

CISCE: Class 6

Case 2: Division of a Decimal Number by a Decimal Number

Step 1: Convert the decimals to whole numbers

Step 2: Simplify the fraction

Example:
`5.065 / 0.05` = `"5.065 × 100"/ "0.05 × 100"`

                 = `5.065 / 5`
                 = 101.3

CISCE: Class 6

Case 3: Division of Decimal by 10, 100, 1000, etc.

Step 1: Move the decimal point to the left

Step 2: Simplify the fraction

Example:

  1. `48.7 / 10` =  4.87

  2. `937.3 / 100` =  9.373

  3. `520.81 / 1000` =  0.52081
CISCE: Class 6

Key Points Summary

  • Decimal as Fraction: 6.2 = `62/10`, 0.68 = `68/100`

  • Point Slide: Division by 10 → slide one place left; by 100 → two places left, etc.

Example Question 1

Find: 6.6 ÷ 2.2

6.6 ÷ 2.2

`= 66/10 ÷ 22/10`

`= 66/10 xx 10/22`

`= (66 xx 10)/(10 xx 22)`

`= (10 xx 66)/(10 xx 22)`

`= 10/10 xx 66/22`

`= 1/1 xx 3`

= 3

Example Question 2

Find: 33.73 ÷ 2

33.73 ÷ 2

`= (33.73)/2 xx 1/1`

`= (33.73)/2 xx (1 xx 100)/(1 xx 100)`

`= (33.73)/2 xx 100/100`

`= (33.73 xx 100)/(2 xx 100)`

`= (3373)/(2 xx 100)`

`= (3373 xx 1)/(2 xx 100)`

`= (3373)/2 xx 1/100`

`= 1686.5 xx 1/100`

`= (1686.5)/100`

= 16.865

Example Question 3

Find: 0.0125 ÷ 0.05

0.0125 ÷ 0.05

`= 125/10000 ÷ 5/100`

`= 125/10000 xx 100/5`

`= (125 xx 100)/(10000 xx 5)`

`= (100 xx 125)/(10000 xx 5)`

`= 100/10000 xx 125/5`

`= 1/100 xx 25`

`= (1 xx 25)/100`

`= 25/100`

= 0.25

Example Question 4

Find: 4.449 ÷ 4

4.449 ÷ 4

`= (4.449)/4 xx 1/1`

`= (4.499)/4 xx (1 xx 1000)/(1 xx 1000)`

`= (4.449)/4 xx (1000)/(1000)`

`= (4.449 xx 1000)/(4 xx 1000)`

`= (4449 xx 1)/(4 xx 1000)`

`= (4449)/4 xx 1/1000`

`= 1112.25 xx 1/1000`

`= (1112.25)/(1000)`

= 1.11225

Example Question 5

Find: 233 ÷ 0.5

`= 233/0.5 xx 1/1`

`= 233/0.5 xx 10/10`

`= (233 xx 10)/(0.5 xx 10)`

`= (233 xx 10)/5`

`= (233)/5 xx 10`

= 46.6 x 10

= 466

Example Question 6

Find: 0.375 ÷ 1.5

0.375 ÷ 1.5

`= 375/1000 ÷ 15/10`

`= 375/1000 xx 10/15`

`= (375 xx 10)/(1000 xx 15)`

`= (10 xx 375)/(1000 xx 15)`

`= 10/1000 xx 375/15`

`= 1/100 xx 25`

`= (1 xx 25)/100`

`= 25/100`

= 0.25

Example Question 7

Each side of a regular polygon is 2.5 cm in length. The perimeter of the polygon is 12.5 cm. How many sides does the polygon have?

The perimeter of a regular polygon is the sum of the lengths of all its equal sides = 12.5 cm.
Length of each side = 2.5 cm.

Thus, the number of sides = `12.5/2.5 = 125/25 = 5`.

The polygon has 5 sides.

Example Question 8

Find: 525 ÷ 0.015

525 ÷ 0.015

`= 525/0.015 xx 1/1`

`= 525/0.015 xx (1 xx 1000)/(1 xx 1000)`

`= 525/0.015 xx (1000)/(1000)`

`= (525 xx 1000)/(0.015 xx 1000)`

`= (525 xx 1000)/15`

`= 525/15 xx 1000`

`= 525/15 xx 1000`

= 35 × 1000

= 35000

Example Question 9

A car covers a distance of 89.1 km in 2.2 hours. What is the average distance covered by it in 1 hour?

Distance covered by the car = 89.1 km.

Time required to cover this distance = 2.2 hours.

So distance covered by it in 1 hour = `(89.1)/2.2 = 891/22` = 40.5 km.
