Meaning

Labelling is a simple-looking but important task; it involves designing the label that is placed on a product's package.

Types of Labels:

  • Simple tag on unbranded products.
  • Complex graphics on branded products.

Functions of Labelling

  • Describes the product: The label specifies the contents of the product, giving details about what it contains - for example, on products like tea, prickly heat powder, and fast food mixes.
  • Identifies the product or brand: The label carries identification details such as the manufacturer, weight, MRP (maximum retail price), and batch number - as seen on products like toothpaste and hair oil.
  • Grades the product: The label categorises or grades the product into different quality or feature-based categories.
  • Helps in promotion of the product: The label supports promotional activity through slogans and offers such as "extra free", "save ₹15" or "free toothbrush inside" - used on products like detergents, shaving cream, and toothpaste.
  • Provides legally required information: The label includes information that is legally mandatory, such as ingredients, a veg/non-veg mark, relevant dates, and safety warnings; this function is especially important for products like food, drugs, tobacco, and hazardous materials.
