Magnification Due to Spherical Lenses

Magnification is the ratio of the height of the image (h2) to the height of the object (h1 ). It is used to determine the size and nature of the image formed by convex and concave lenses.

`"Magnification" = "Height of the Image"/"Height of the object"`

 \[\mathrm{i.e.~M}=\frac{\mathrm{h}_2}{\mathrm{h}_1}\]

Formula in Terms of Distances: Magnification is also the ratio of the image distance (v) to the object distance (u).

`"Magnification" = "Distance of the Image"/"Distance of the object"`

\[\mathrm{i.e.~M}=\frac{\mathrm{v}}{\mathrm{u}}\]

Interpretation of Magnification Value:

  • M>1 → Enlarged image
  • M<1 → Diminished image
  • M=1 → Same size image

Sign Convention:

  • M>0 → Image is upright (virtual).
  • M<0 → Image is inverted (real).
