Definition: Demagnetisation Box

Demagnetisation is the loss of a magnet's net magnetic moment, caused by disturbance of the ordered alignment of its atomic magnetic domains.

Method 1 — Demagnetisation by Heating/Hammering (Atomic Domain Theory)

A magnet's permanent magnetic moment arises from the ordered alignment of atomic domains.

Method 2 — Demagnetisation Using a Solenoid (Laboratory Method)

Procedure (as per source):

  1. The magnetic rod is placed inside a solenoid carrying alternating current (AC).
  2. The current is gradually reduced to zero.
  3. Once the current reaches zero, the rod becomes demagnetised.
