Introduction

A carbon resistor is a small cylindrical component made of carbon composition, widely used in electronic circuits to provide a fixed resistance. Because resistors are physically too small to print numeric values on, manufacturers use a standardised colour-coding system to indicate resistance value and tolerance.

Think of the colour bands like a barcode on a grocery item — instead of printing the price directly, a scannable code conveys the value instantly to anyone who knows how to "read" it.

Structure of a Carbon Resistor

A standard carbon resistor has four coloured bands, read from left to right (the band closest to one edge is read first):

Band Position Represents
1st Band First significant digit
2nd Band Second significant digit
3rd Band Multiplier (power of 10)
4th Band Tolerance (± % accuracy)

Always start reading from the band nearest the edge of the resistor body. The tolerance band (gold/silver) is usually spaced slightly apart from the other three — this gap helps identify the correct reading direction.
