Introduction: Thermal Properties
In our daily life, we often feel things as hot or cold by touch, but this is only a rough idea. To study heat in science, we need a clear quantity called temperature, which tells us how hot or cold a body is in an exact way.

Definition: Temperature
The temperature of a body determines its hotness, while heat energy is its heat content.
OR
The degree of hotness or coldness of an object (and not the amount of its thermal energy) is called temperature.

Historical Background / Origin
- In previous lessons, only length, mass and time were used to describe mechanical systems.
- All other mechanical quantities were expressed using these three fundamental quantities.
- While studying heat-related phenomena, a fourth fundamental quantity, temperature, was introduced.
