Solution

When we see a pool of water. The pool appears less deep as it is. This is due to the refraction of light.

When white light is allowed to pass through the glass prism. It splits into seven colour this is called dispersion of light.

In the figure given alongside, a narrow beam of white light is shown to pass through a triangular glass prism. After passing through the prism, it produces a spectrum YX on the screen.

Why do different colours of white light bend through different angles with respect to the incident beam of light?

A ray of white light falls on a prism. Draw a ray diagram to show that the prism disperses the white light.

  1. A beam of monochromatic light undergoes minimum deviation through an equiangular prism, how does the beam pass through the prism, with respect to its base?

Mention three properties of infra red radiations similar to the visible light. Give two such properties of infrared radiations which are not true for visible light.

The wavelengths of violet and red light are 4000 Å and 8000 Å respectively. Which of the two has the higher frequency?

Draw a labelled diagram: Dispersion of light through a prism.

What is the cause of the dispersion of white light through a glass prism? Draw a ray diagram to show the path of light when two identical glass prisms are arranged together in an inverted position with respect to each other and a narrow beam of white light is allowed to fall obliquely on one of the faces of the prisms.

How can the presence of ultraviolet radiation be detected?

Write the range of wavelength of the infrared spectrum.

Suggest one way, in each case, by which we can detect the presence of Infrared radiations.

Say TRUE or FALSE

After passing through a prism, white light splits into a band of seven colours
