Definition: Motional emf

The emf induced across the ends of a conductor due to its motion in a magnetic field is called motional emf.

Maharashtra State Board: Class 11

Law: Motional EMF Law

When a conductor of length 'l' moves across or rotates in a magnetic field, an emf is induced across its ends, called motional emf. Motional electromotive force can be generated in two ways:

  • Due to translational motion — linear motion of a conductor in a magnetic field.
  • Due to rotational motion — rotation of a conductor in a magnetic field.
